Lifted floral notes, fresh dark cherry, bay leaves and hints of rhubarb. The palate is smooth with a fine minerally tannin structure, shows freshness and vibrancy with blue and dark berry fruits, hints of anise and a good length of flavour.
While this fruit is typically destined for Hugo's Reserve Shiraz, Johnny's block is a modern take on McLaren Vale shiraz spending less time in oak and showing more fruit characters.
The region’s mild summer and warm autumn resulted in a gentle and slow ripening period and delayed harvest, producing outstanding fruit. While it was a wet La Niña-influenced year for other parts of Australia, McLaren Vale’s vineyards received below average rainfall. Wines tended to show a high natural acidity.
Region: McLaren Vale
Year Planted: 1969
Elevation: 180m above sea level
Sourced from the first Shiraz vines planted by John Hugo on the Hugo Estate planted in 1969. Low yielding vines which produce the best fruit on the property. The 4 Acre ‘Old vine’ Shiraz vines are handpicked and hand sorted before ferment.
